Behavior classificationTagless is the world’s first hands-free fare collection solution commercially deployed on both metro and bus. Its live operation in Seoul demonstrates
that the technology is commercially proven across different transit modes, infrastructure configurations and real-world operating conditions.
Tagless combines BLE, UWB and Vision AI within one integrated hands-free fare collection service. BLE supports broad, reliable detection in high-density
environments, UWB enables precise positioning for complex real-world edge cases, and Vision AI adds AI-powered behavior classification for enhanced
operational control. The technologies can be selectively applied and combined according to each operating environment.

Case Study
The Problem
UI-dong in Seoul is an old bed town located about 10km away from the CBD(Central Business District), which has not yet been redeveloped, so the population and ridership are not high, but the UI-Sinseol line, a light rail line, was opened to improve infrastructure in 2017. As an old residential area with a high proportion of elderly people and a large number of office workers who commute to the city center at a relatively reasonable housing cost, there were two difficult challenges : a large variance in traffic during peak hours and off-peak hours, and consideration for the mobility handicapped by the age. It was also necessary to minimize investment costs given the relatively low ridership.
The Rationale
Tmoney has been responsible for transportation in Korea as a transit ticketing system supplier, operator and dominant transportation card issuer and settlement business provider for public transportation and taxis in metropolitan areas and major cities in Korea, with a population of 10 million and 40 million transactions per day from 2004 to the present. It has been the fastest to commercialize the latest trends in payment technology. From inter-operable nationwide transportation prepaid and credit/debit cards in 2004 to SE-based mobile payment in 2010 and HCE-based mobile payment in 2018, and after 5 years of researching and developing, Tmoney released Tagless adopting BIBO concept for the next generation ticketing solution, which is even more innovative and convenient.

The Problem
Incheon Metropolitan City is Korea's third-largest city with a population of 3 million — and by working-age and economically active
population, it has already overtaken Busan to become the nation's second-largest economic hub. It is home to national core infrastructure: Incheon
International Airport (3rd worldwide in international passengers by ACI, and Korea's primary gateway), the Port of Incheon (Korea's second-largest
container port), and the Songdo International Business District (IFEZ). Incheon is a self-contained international city where both work and daily
life are completed within its own boundaries.
For such a city, its urban rail is far more than a commuting tool. It is the artery of the city economy — connecting the port, the international
business district, and the old and new downtowns — and the space through which hundreds of thousands of citizens move every day. Yet the conventional
tap-based card system imposed friction unworthy of Incheon's stature.
What Incheon needed was not partial convenience improvements, but a complete transformation turning the entire urban rail network into a single Tagless zone.
The Rationale
For 20 years since 2004, Tmoney has been the developer, supplier, and operator of transit payment systems for the Seoul metropolitan area
and major Korean cities — serving a population of 10 million and processing 40 million transactions daily — as well as the issuer of the nation's
leading transit card and its integrated settlement provider. From the new transit card in 2004, to SE-based mobile payment in 2010, to HCE-based
mobile payment in 2018, Tmoney has been the fastest to commercialize every new trend in payment technology.
In particular, in September 2023, Tmoney commercialized the world's first non-honor-based BIBO (Be-In-Be-Out) Tagless system on the Ui-Sinseol
Line — winning the UITP and Transport Ticketing Global awards in consecutive years. This technology and operational know-how is an asset held by
Tmoney alone.
For the Incheon project, Tmoney had to scale its operational experience from a 13-gate light rail into a full heavy-rail deployment across 68
stations and 85 gates. This was not a mere increase in quantity.
Tmoney was the only provider simultaneously equipped with proven technology, real commercial operating experience, and the nationwide integrated settlement infrastructure.

The Problem
If metro Tagless presumes a 'fixed gate,' bus Tagless is a challenge where that very premise does not hold. Unlike the metro, where gates
and their surroundings are fixed, a bus moves on its own with its payment terminal onboard, stopping in different road environments at different
positions every time. When the space that serves as the basis for recognition itself moves, ensuring accuracy and stability requires know-how and
deliberation of a different dimension.
And in Seoul, this 'moving gate' does not exist alone. Tagless buses stop side by side at the same stop, and overtake and cross each other while in
service. In other words, in an environment where multiple moving gates interact in combination, the system must go beyond 'inside a bus or not' to
distinguish 'inside which bus.' The moment a passenger of the adjacent vehicle is misread as one's own, the fare and the entire transfer chain go
wrong.
What Seoul buses needed was not a 'transplant of metro Tagless,' but an entirely new recognition architecture that tracks the whole boarding process among multiple moving spaces.
The Rationale
For over 20 years since 2004, Tmoney has been the developer, supplier, and operator of transit payment systems for the Seoul metropolitan
area and major Korean cities — serving 10 million people and 40 million daily transactions — as well as the leading transit card issuer and integrated
settlement provider. Seoul's integrated transfer fare system has run on Tmoney's payment and settlement infrastructure for over two decades, and the
only provider able to overlay a new payment method without breaking that system is Tmoney, its designer and operator.
Technologically, too, Tmoney was the only choice.
Tmoney was the only provider simultaneously equipped with proven technology, real commercial operating experience, and the nationwide integrated settlement infrastructure.

Tagless on moving buses required key requirements distinct from those of the metro.

The Problem
Light rail (Ui-Sinseol), an entire city network (Incheon Metro), and the moving gate (Seoul Bus) — Tagless had already been commercially
proven in three environments. The remaining task was clear: large-scale deployment at the apex of Korean transit demand, on the busiest golden
line in Seoul.
Seoul Metro Line 9 is called the 'Golden Line.' From Gimpo Airport through Magok, Noryangjin, and Yeouido, and on to Express Bus Terminal, Sinnonhyeon,
Gangnam, and Samseong (Bongeunsa), it pierces through Seoul's core business districts and the airport gateway in a single corridor. Peak congestion on
its express trains — where commuter demand concentrates — reaches 199%, a level beyond comparison not only with regular trains (128%) but with any
previous project. Line 9 is, quite literally, the heart of Seoul transit.
What Line 9 needed was not a simple transplant of proven technology, but a redesign of the recognition architecture to withstand Seoul's most congested environment — and the completion of transfer between bus and metro.
The Rationale
For over 20 years since 2004, Tmoney has been the developer, supplier, and operator of transit payment systems for the Seoul metropolitan
area — serving 10 million people and 40 million daily transactions — as well as the leading transit card issuer and integrated settlement provider.
Seoul's integrated transfer fare system runs on Tmoney's payment and settlement infrastructure, and completing a transfer trip chain between bus and
metro on top of that system is a domain possible only for Tmoney, its designer and operator.
The lineage of technical proof is also unique to Tmoney.
